GUWAHATI: A youth went missing after jumping into the river Brahmaputra from the Saraighat Bridge here on Sunday.

According to eyewitnesses, the youth hung on to the railing of the bridge for around half-an-hour and kept on saying that he would jump into the river. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the local people and the city police all made an effort to convince him not to take the drastic step, but the youth eventually jumped into the river, the eyewitnesses added.

SDRF sources said that after the youth jumped into the river, they pursued him with their rescue boats and attempted to give him a life jacket, but he disregarded them and dove inside the water.

According to sources, the youth said before he jumped into the river that he hails from Barpeta. However, his exact identity is yet to be ascertained.

Meanwhile, search operations are underway by the SDRF, Army and the police to locate the youth.
