Massive Fire in Guwahati's Fatasil Region

GUWAHATI: A major incident of fire took place in the slums of the Fatasil locality of Guwahati in Assam on the evening of Friday, December.

According to reports, a massive fire broke out in the Harijan Colony area of Guwahati's Fatasil region. Although there was no casualty reported in this incident, property worth several lakhs have been gutted in this fire. Several cooking gas cylinders also exploded in this inferno, increasing the damages manifold. Some local people also mentioned that some of the households had stocked Kerosene oil, which is utilised in domestic and streetside eateries.

Fire and emergency services from across the city were called in to control the flame, but the damages were beyond count. Between 100 and 150 houses have been reported to have been completely damaged in this inferno.

Ministers of Assam Cabinet, Ashok Singhal and Jayanta Malla Baruah visited the location during the night and took stock of the damages.

According to local people, the narrow roads of the area were the main reason that the large amount of damage by this fire. Although the vehicles reached the locality within minutes, narrow roads and congestion caused problems with controlling the fire. Almost all the families have lost their property, including important documents and other items.

This is the second major incident of fire in the city within the current week. Property worth several lakhs of rupees was gutted in a massive fire that broke out in the Amrit Nagar Nepali Basti area of Basistha here on Monday. According to official sources, many houses were gutted in the fire, the cause of which was not ascertained. However, it is suspected that several LPG cylinders burst as a result of that fire.

Several concerned citizens have raised questions about the actions of GMC in terms of permissions and allowing unsafe accommodations in the city. Demands for the expansion of roads and removal of parking to allow free movement of emergency vehicles have also been raised.
