Thank you messages have flooded Twitter. People across the globe are expressing their gratitude to Lupe Hernández who invented the life-saving hand sanitiser almost 52 years ago.

Hernández was a student nurse at Bakersfield in California when she got worried about the availability of water and soap for medical professionals to use before coming in contact with patients. This is when she realised that alcohol-based gel can provide a solution to this. And voila! The hand sanitiser was born.

People have thanked her for the great invention. Her photos have been posted and tweeted. Many have even taken pride in the fact that she is a Latina.

Since 2020, hand sanitisers have become an integral part of everyone's lives. According to reports, the demand for hand sanitisers and liquid soap has gone up by over 400% across the globe. With the second wave of COVID turning out to be even worse than the first phase, the demand for hygiene products like hand sanitiser is expected to grow even further.

The hand sanitiser has been around since the early 1970s. It is only now that people have come to know about the person behind this incredible product.
