SOMEREN: The Axom Milon is an annual gathering of Assamese People residing in different countries of Europe. This year’s event saw the participation of over 100 people, residing across 14 European countries in the Netherlands.

Axom Milon 2023 was organised at Someren in Netherlands earlier this month and the event saw a vibrant gathering of Assamese people from different walks of life. A total of 131 participants residing across 14 European countries took part in the event. The event was flagged off with an engaging ice-breaking session aimed at fostering connections among the participants of the event. It also featured a wide variety of games and other fun activities for both children and adults, which managed to keep everyone throughout the day.

The cultural event organised in the evening was graced by Devendra Arya, Counsellor at Indian Embassy at The Hague, as the chief guest. The highlight of the event was the launching of the first digital Axom Milon magazine titled ‘Sammannoi Setu’. It is an attempt to encourage both experienced writers and newcomers to explore their writing skills.

The cultural event in the evening saw a nostalgic journey featuring several Assamese classics like ‘ture mure alukore jatra’ and ‘jun dhone jonalite’. Other presentations included the Dashavatar Nritya, Borgeet, Jyoti Sangeet, Tokari Geet, Xotriya Nrityo, and several other art forms. This was followed by the open stage event where the participants engaged in singing and dancing. A typical Assamese breakfast consisting of ‘doi, sira, gur’ along with ‘Masor Tenga’ was served for dinner, amongst other cuisine options on offer.

The organisers mentioned that one of the major reasons for the event’s success was the well-organised distribution of tasks among participants and how enthusiastically everyone enjoyed the task was commendable. “Axom Milon is more than just a gathering; its an emotional connection to one’s roots and culture, emphasizing the importance of staying connected to one’s heritage. These events provide a platform for the children to proudly showcase their culture, mother tongue and attire. Along with the cultural program, all the participants, children and adults alike, participated in different traditional Assamese games with zeal and enjoyed to the fullest. Looking forward to the next year,” mentioned the organisers of Axom Milon 2023.
