Cambodian King Norodam Sihamoni Visits India to Mark 70th Anniversary of Cambodia-India Relation

NEW DELHI: On his three-day visit to India, King Norodom Sihamoni of Cambodia received a call from External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday. The visit of the monarch coincides with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties between India and Cambodia.

Since his arrival on May 29, Sihamoni has had meetings with several of India's senior officials, including President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The latter also organised a feast in the king's honour.

The king then paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at the Rajghat in Delhi after President Murmu introduced him to Modi, India's Union Ministers, and other dignitaries there. Also, he placed a wreath.

Jaishankar expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to meet Sihamoni on his first visit via Twitter.

Taking on twitter PM Modi wrote on twitter, “Delighted to welcome King HM Norodom Sihamoni of Cambodia. Our nations share deep historical and cultural ties, and we look forward to strengthening our friendship and cooperation even further. May his visit mark a new chapter in India-Cambodia relations.”

On the other hand, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar wrote on twitter, “Honoured to call on King HM Norodom Sihamoni of Cambodia.

His visit, as our two countries celebrate 70th anniversary of our diplomatic relations, reaffirms the strong civilizational bond between us.

Today that is expressed in cooperation in heritage conservation, demining, water conservation and socio-economic projects.”

Through training opportunities through the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation Programme and scholarships under the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, India actively supports Cambodia in the development of human resources and capabilities. Additionally, the country has provided grants and low-interest loans for construction projects.

Additionally, India has graciously donated USD 1.5 million to help Cambodia purchase demining equipment. A significant line of credit worth USD 50 million has also been made available by India to help with the purchase of defence equipment from India.

Customised training programmes are offered in India for members of the Cambodian Army in order to improve military cooperation. Additionally, Indian Army Mobile Training Teams have been sent to Cambodia to teach Cambodian Army personnel on the job.
