NEW DELHI: New satellite imagery has disclosed that China is building a new dam on a tributary of the river Ganga, close to the tri-junction of the borders with India and Nepal. As per the imagery's indications, the dam would be used to control the flow of water in the direction in which the river passes.
The occurrence comes as a consequence of China revealing its plans to build a super dam adjacent to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Tibet on the Yarlung Zangbo river's lower reaches flowing into Shang in Arunachal Pradesh and then to the Brahmaputra in Assam. China has also elevated the creation of dual-use infrastructure and villages as well as military in the eastern and western zones of the LAC.
Damien Symon, a geospatial intelligence researcher working at the Intel Lab, tweeted the images of satellite showing earth development and dam construction activities which were done by the Chinese on Tibet Autonomous Region's Mabja Zangbo river since May 2021. The images exhibit the hindrance of the river's path, the formation of an embankment-type dam and a reservoir.
As per the recent satellite images, the dam emerges to be 350 metres to 400 metres long and the structure is in development and the purpose is unknown at present, Symon further revealed. The dam is located a few kilometres north of the tri-junction of China's borderline with India and Nepal, Symon stated. The Mabja Zangbo river drifts into the Ghaghara or Karnali river in Nepal prior to eventually joining the Ganga river in India. . India and China have been fastened in a military deadlock along the eastern Ladakh's LAC since May 2020.
