NEW DELHI: A child of United States citizenship with his roots in Mongolia has been appointed to the third highest position in Tibetian Buddhism by the Dalai Lama.
According to reports, the eight-year-old Mongolian- American boy was named as the 10th Khalkha Jetsun Dhampa Rinpoche. Pictures have surfaced showing the Dalai lama participating in a ceremony at the Dharamshala region of Himachal Pradesh in India.
The Dalai Lama is the topmost leader of the Tibetian Buddhism religion and the eight-year-old has now been appointed to its third most important position. He now lives in Dharamshala in exile from his home in Tibet following the annexation of Tibet by the Chinese government.
The eight-year-old United States citizen is said to be the son of a university professor in the United States. He is also the grandson of a former Mongolian member of the parliament.
Nearly 30 years back the Dalai lama had named another person the position of the 11th Panchem Lama. But the Chinese authorities swiftly got him and his family kidnapped and nothing was ever heard about them after 1995. The Chinese authorities then replaced the selected candidate with their own candidate on the important position of Tibetian Buddhism.
The religious leader had escaped from Tibet in 1959 to escape religious prosecution by the Chinese authorities. Tibetan spiritual leader had earlier mentioned that he will be 88. Since then, he has been the longest-staying guest of the Indian government, enjoying every possible liberty, but the tragedy of Tibet has yet to be resolved. "Today, I am stateless, unable to return to my country. But we Tibetans have a saying, Your homeland is wherever you are happy. And whoever loves you is your parent," the Buddhist monk wrote in the TIME weekly newsmagazine in an article titled "The Dalai Lama on the gratitude he feels looking back at his escape from Tibet," published on Tuesday.
