NEW DELHI: The Iranian Ambassador to India has mentioned their relations with the People's Republic of China will not affect the relations between India and Iran. He also requested Delhi to resume the import of crude oil from Iran.

China had brokered a peace treaty between Iran and Saudi Arabia to ensure peace and stability in the Gulf Region. As India is at loggerheads with its neighbour China regarding the attempted pushing of the international border by Chinese Forces, Iran fears an adverse effect on their petroleum supply to India.

This development comes amidst the country of India planning to increase its crude oil imports from Russia owing to the friendly relations as well as the price difference. India’s decision regarding the imports from Russia comes despite the growing pressure from the US and its allies as a part of their economic sanctions on Moscow.

“India is not Taiwan or South Korea. India could easily resist pressure from the West as it has resisted over buying oil from Russia. We hope that India will start importing oil from Iran,” mentioned the Iranian Ambassador Iraj Elahi. He also mentioned how peace and stability in the Gulf region will be benefiting the Indians residing and working in the region. It will also result in an increase in business engagement between India and the countries of the Gulf region.

“Of course, there are shortcomings from both sides. We understand the willingness of the Indian government towards Chabahar. We believe that Chabahar is not just an economic issue.” he said while talking about India’s approach towards the Chabahar port. For India, Chabahar is important. .. Iran has different ports in all parts of the Persian Gulf. We can use different ports for transit and import and export. But Chabahar is an oceanic port. It is close to the Indian Ocean and closest to the route to Afghanistan,” he added.
