Indian-Origin Doctor In US Charged For Sexually Abusing Female Patients

NEW YORK: A senior Indian-origin primary care doctor in the state of Georgia of USA, has been charged on multiple counts for sexually assaulting four female veteran patients during regular check-ups over a 12-month period, the Department of Justice informed.

Rajesh Motibhai Patel, aged around 68 years, worked at the Veterans Affairs Medical Centre in Decatur, Georgia and he is accused of violating his patients' constitutional right to bodily integrity while acting under colour of law and for engaging in unwanted sexual contact, the department said in a press release recently.

“Patel allegedly sexually abused his female patients between 2019 and 2020 and violated his oath to do no harm to patients under his care," said US Attorney Ryan K Buchanan.

“Our Veterans have made incredible sacrifices for our country and deserve the best medical treatment and highest quality of care,” Buchanan was quoted to have said in the release.

Veterans Affairs Inspector General Michael J Missa said that veterans and their families expect and deserve the highest quality of healthcare delivered in a ‘safe and accountable setting’, which did not correspond to the abuse they were subjected to.

Office of Inspector General in the Department of Veterans Affairs is investigating the case, the release added.

Earlier, in April, an Indian-origin man in Australia had been convicted of drugging and raping five Korean women and using a hidden camera to film the acts, according to reports.

Balesh Dhankhar, a prominent member of the Indian diaspora in Australia with political ties, faced trial over 39 charges including 13 counts of rape committed between January and October 2018. Dhankar was found guilty of all charges by a jury at the District Court in Sydney in mid-April.

The jury heard that Dhankhar used a specific modus operandi to ensnare the women, by posting a fake job for Korean translators. He used the same hotel, café, and Korean restaurant to meet the women before taking them to his apartment in the Sydney CBD on flimsy grounds and then drugged and raped them.

The data expert, aged around 43 years, broke down in court when the jury foreman pronounced him guilty to the 39 charges against him. He will face court again in May and will be sentenced later in the year.
