TORONTO: An Indian student, who was working as a food delivery partner in Canada, was killed several days after being violently assaulted by unidentified miscreants during a deadly carjacking incident, media reports that emerged recently said.

The ghastly incident happened when 24-year-old Gurvinder Nath was out to delivering a pizza at around 2:10 am on July 9 in Britannia and Creditview roads in Mississauga, a large Canadian city neighbouring Toronto on Lake Ontario. That is when unknown suspects is said to have attacked him and tried to steal his vehicle, CTV News channel reported.

Inspector Phil King of Peel Regional Police’s Homicide Bureau said that, according to investigators on the case, it is believed that there are multiple suspects involved and that the food order was placed to lure Nath to that specific area. King also added that investigators managed to obtain an audio recording of the Pizza order placed prior to the attack.

When Nath arrived to deliver the pizza, he was “violently assaulted” and left injured critically at the hands of the suspect who then robbed him of his vehicle and fled the scene, police said.

There were multiple witnesses to the incident and they came to his aid, calling for help. Nath was rushed to a trauma centre where he was admitted before being pronounced dead on July 14.

Consul General of India in Toronto Siddhartha Nath said Gurvinder Nath's death is considered a "heartrending loss,” even as he extended his condolences to family members, friends and the wider community.

He informed about the contact made by the consulate general with the family after his death.

"It was heartening for me to see how the community responded, came together both online and physically to support the family in this time of grief," the Consul General said.

While, he said, nothing can make good the loss, it will come as some solace to the grieving family and it's also a signal of the community’s spirit because, he added, it is in times like this when there is a test of the spirit and the solidarity and the sense of empathy among the people.

The Consul General also said he is hoping that the people responsible are brought to justice.

Meanwhile, Inspector King said although it is early times in the investigation, police are of the belief that Nath was an innocent victim. In the hours following the attack, Nath’s vehicle was found abandoned in the area of Old Creditview and Old Derry roads, which is less than five kilometres from the crime scene, King said.

“The working theory is that perhaps there may have been extensive injuries (to Nath) that may not have been anticipated and that may have caused (the suspects) to get rid of the vehicle early,” he said.

Since then, the vehicle has gone through forensic examination and many pieces of evidence have been retrieved by the police, according to King.

Police also could not find any known connection between Nath and his attackers.

King warned those responsible that regardless of their level of participation, they are complicit in the murder of Gurvinder Nath and they are sure to be arrested and charged accordingly.

Nath's body is scheduled to be flown to India on July 27 with the assistance of the Consulate General of India in Toronto, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) reported.

Nath was a Brampton resident and he was on summer break before he was bound to return to his final semester of business school.

Nath’s cousin, Balram Krishan, said he was innocent and was just delivering pizza when random people hit him on his head.

Nath had arrived in Canada from India in July, 2021 and had plans to open a business of his own.

On Saturday, more than 200 people gathered at a candlelight vigil for Nath in Mississauga, it was reported.
