MOSCOW: Russia launched a massive drone attack on Ukraine on Monday striking several cities including the capital Kyiv and Odesha while shelling other major cities of the country. This attack started on the eve of May 9, which is a public holiday in Russia to mark the defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945 bringing World War II to an end.
According to the Ukrainian authorities, Russia fired more than 60 Iranian-made kamikaze-style drones at key targets in Ukraine including 36 at Kyiv. Although the drones were shot down by Ukrainian forces, the debris still managed to do considerable damage to several buildings and injure many people.
This is being called the biggest drone swarm attack by the Russian military since the beginning of the war which comes after days of a slowdown since March.
It is important to note that victory day was earlier celebrated on the same day in Ukraine as well, but President Zelenskyy changed the date of the holiday to May 8 to match it with the practice of the Western allies.
While the Ukrainian side compares ‘Russian fascism’ with ‘Nazism’, Russia’s invasion of the Ukrainian territories since February last year was being termed as a step towards ‘de-Nazify’ Ukraine and protecting themselves.
Russian forces pushed towards control of Bakhmut, which Ukraine called the only prize Moscow received on Victory Day for a very costly Russian winter offensive. This city has seen war for over nine months now with Russian troops trying to get the better of the Ukranian militia. In the daily statement regarding military action in the previous 24 hours, the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces said there had been heavy fighting in Bakhmut and surrounding areas.
It also mentioned that more than 20 towns and villages came under shelling in the Central Zaporizhzhia region. The southern city of Kherson and seven other locations in that region were also shelled - on the west bank of the Dnipro River abandoned by Russian forces in November.
