One Arrested for Blast in Istanbul: Six Dead, Several Injured

ISTANBUL: A loud blast was reported from a busy street in Istanbul of Turkey. Reports suggest that the blast left six people dead as well as 81 injured on the spot as well as dozens of people injured.

The blast happened at about 4 PM on Sunday in the famous Istiklal shopping street. Photos from the site show a crater at the point where the blast expectedly took place. Accompanying fire added to the chaos a previous attack by Islamic State militants had left more than 500 people injured in the same location.

The President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan mentioned that a blast had rocked the busy shopping district of Taksim Square in Istanbul. He did not give any details about the source of the blast. But the vice president of the country mentioned that a suicide bomber had carried out the attack on the city.

Commenting on the incident in a press meeting, the president of the country said "It might be wrong if we say for sure that this is terror but according to first signs.There is a smell of terror there, The relevant units of our state are working to find the perpetrators,behind this vile attack,"

A huge number of people were present in the area as it was a Sunday. The police department sealed off the area immediately. Helicopters were also pressed into action to assess the situation better. All entries to the location were barred immediately with a large number of emergency vehicles and personnel working to save the injured.

According to reports, a witness mentioned a loud explosion. He also mentioned seeing three or four people on the ground and that there was complete chaos immediately as people started to run.

A few hours after the attack, one suspect was arrested in relation to the blast. The Interior Minister of Turkey announced that this person is now believed to have placed the bomb in the location of the blast before escaping. The minister accused the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) of causing the blast that killed 6 people.
