ISLAMABAD: In a horrific incident, a woman was admitted to hospital in Peshawar, Pakistan with a nail hammered into her head on the orders of a faith healer to give birth to a baby boy
Doctor Haider Khan told AFP that the woman arrived at a hospital in Peshawar's northern city after attempting to pull the nail with pliers.
"She was totally conscious but in excruciating pain," Khan added after removing the spike
The five-centimetre (two-inch) nail entered the top of the woman's forehead but missed her brain, according to an X-ray. The woman initially informed hospital staff that she had hammered the nail into her head herself on the faith healers suggestion, before later admitting that it was he who had done it.
"We have collected the hospital's CCTV footage and hope to find the woman shortly," said Abbas Ahsan, the municipal police commander.
CCPO Ahsan said that a special team had been constituted to "bring to justice the fake peer (faith healer) who played with the life of an innocent woman and put a nail in her head with the false promise of a male child."
"The team will also investigate why the incident was not reported to the police by the treating doctor," Ahsan said.
Hospital staff told the media that the victim was a mother to three daughters. Her husband had allegedly threatened to leave her if she gave birth to a fourth girl.
"She is three months pregnant and because of her husband's fear she went to the faith healer who gave her taweez, things to recite, and the nail. The victim then returned home and hammered the nail in her head. She was discovered by family members after she screamed in pain and was shifted to the hospital.
