Sanath Jayasuriya Praises PM Modi For Sending Aid Amid Sri Lanka Economic Crisis

New Delhi: Former Sri Lankan veteran cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya has expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for sending aid amid the economic crisis in Sri Lanka.

"Being a neighbour, the big brother next to our country has been helping us... We are very grateful to the Indian government and the Prime Minister (Modi)," Jayasurya said.

He also expressed concern about the current situation in his country and asserted that it is unfortunate that the people of Sri Lanka have to go through this situation.

''There is a shortage of goods, gas, and electricity in the country. People have come out and started protesting, people want to show the Sri Lankan government that they are facing difficulties,'' he said while commenting on the ongoing protest in the country.

He further said that at this time, the present government will have to take responsibility for this and if the right people do not come forward, then the situation will be very bad.

Due to the deteriorating situation in Sri Lanka, there is a lot of protest against the current government and recently cabinet ministers had resigned from ministerial posts.

In view of the economic crisis, Sri Lanka declared a state of emergency, although it was later withdrawn.

A Parliament session was called for the first time after the end of the Emergency, but many of the government's allies did not attend it.

The total number of members of Parliament in Sri Lanka is 225, so the figure of 113 is needed for the majority. But 41 people have withdrawn support from the government.
