New Delhi: Saudi Arabia has carried out the largest mass execution in the kingdom as it executed 81 people in a single day convicted of crimes and terrorism on Saturday.
This figure is more than the number of people, who were hanged in 2021. According to reports, these people were found guilty of committing many heinous crimes.
As per the Saudi Press Agency, those executed included criminals affiliated with the Islamic State group, al-Qaeda, Yemen's Houthi rebel forces or other terrorist organizations.
The Saudi Press Agency also claimed that 73 of the 81 people executed were Saudi citizens. There are 7 Yemenis and one Syrian national. The press agency said that they were plotting attacks on major economic centres, while some of them had killed members of the security forces or were involved in arms smuggling into the country.
These people were hanged after a court trial in Saudi Arabia. The cases of each convict were heard by 13 judges in three different phases.
Interestingly, Saudi Arabia is one of the countries in the Gulf where the highest number of executions take place. In 2021, a total of 69 people were executed in Saudi Arabia.
As per Saudi Arabia's Interior Ministry, the country will continue to take a tough stand against terrorism and extremist ideologies. The ministry has described terrorism as a threat to the stability of the whole world.
Notably, Saudi Arabia has been facing radical terrorism for the past several years. Saudi Arabia is often targeted by Houthi rebels operating in Yemen.
