Saturday 8 January 2022 marks the 80th birth anniversary of the legendary scientist Stephen Hawking who still lives in millions of hearts for his immense contribution to the world of science.

Hawking was a renowned English cosmologist and physicist who served as the director of research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology at Cambridge University until his death in 2018.

The main field of work for Hawking was physics on black holes and general relativity through which he laid emphasis on various new findings.

In the year 1979, Hawking got the high position of Lucasian professorship of Cambridge which was once held by renowned English mathematician Isaac Newton. Before being appointed as this post, he taught gravitational physics as a professor at Cambridge University.

Hawking was born on 8 January 1942 in Oxford of England and had completed his education at Oxford and Trinity College. The brilliant scientist took his last breath on 14 March 2018 at Cambridge, England and passed away at the age of 76.

The physicist married two times, once with Jane Hawking in 1965 with whom he parted ways in 1995 and in the same year of his divorce with Jane he got married with Elaine Mason and again got divorced in 2006. He had three children named Robert Hawking, Timothy Hawking and Lucy Hawking.

At the beginning of the 1960s, Hawking was confronted with an incurable degenerated neuromuscular disease called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. As a scientist, Hawking continued to work even with the disease which gradually started to increase the disabling effects in his body.

A biographical film was made in 2014 based on the life and journey of Hawking titled 'The Theory of Everything' and the biopic became an Oscar-nominated film.

Apart from his work in the field of science, Hawking was also an author who published the best books during his time which are the best sellers.

His books include The Universe in a Nutshell originally published in 2001, The Large Scale Structure of Space-Time in 1973, The Grand Design along with Leonard Mlodinow in 2010, Superspace and Supergravity in 1981, A Briefer History of Time published in the year 2005, The Very Early Universe in 1983 and A Brief History of Time: From the Big Bang to Black Holes in 1988.

For his long decades of contribution in physics, Hawking was honoured with various reputed accolades that include Presidential Medal of Freedom, Adams Prize, Wolf Prize, Albert Einstein Award and Copley Medal.
