The Center of Plasma Physics(CPP) was established in the year 1991 by Govt. of Assam as a research institute to pursue basic research in theoretical and experimental plasma physics. The centre started functioning from a rented premise at Dispur, Guwahati, before moving to it's own premises at Sonapur, Kamrup district, Assam. The center grew from a small group of scientists to a major research institute in North East India.
CPP-IPR is headed by Centre Director, Dr K. S. Goswami and is managed by a Managing Board headed by Director, IPR. It has at present twelve faculty members, fourteen other staff and a number of research scholars and project scientists. The theoretical and experimental research is oriented towards basic plasma physics as well as programs that compliment the major programs at IPR.
