The Department of Youth Resources and Sports came into being as a separate department in the year 1986 bifurcated from the erstwhile Department of School and Physical Education. Then, it was known as the "Department of Physical Education, Sports & Youth Welfare." In the year 1993 the nomenclature of the erstwhile Department of Physical Education and Youth Welfare was changed to the "Department of Youth Resources and Sports" by the State Government.
