New Delhi: Google Maps has recently added a new feature that will direct you to the most fuel-efficient route to your destination.
The little green-and-white leaf that is displayed right next to the estimated driving time guides you through the most fuel-efficient route as suggested by Google. In this way, the app helps the user to save some money on fuel.
A person will be able to use this feature through the free Google Maps app on android and iOS devices. After tapping on Directions, the user must select the car icon. After the driving instructions are given by the app, the user must tap the three dots in the upper right corner. The user must then tap on Route Options and turn on the toggle switch placed against Prefer fuel-efficient routes.
After it is turned on, the leaf-stamped will appear on the screen and the most fuel-efficient route will be displayed. However, Google Maps will show the fastest route if it is turned off. The fastest route and the most fuel-efficient route may sometimes be the same.
When the user chooses one of the routes, Google Maps shows how much fuel will potentially be saved through that route.
This feature of Google Maps works by using artificial intelligence in addition to the data provided by the Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
A number of other factors are taken into consideration such as the average fuel consumption for vehicles in the region, how steep the route's hills are, stop-and-go traffic, and whether the vehicle will be moving on local roads or highways.
