Kharmas also known as Malamas this year starts from Thursday 16 December and will be continued to 14 January next year.
The Kharmas which is called a dirty mass remains effective for a month and it prevents the auspicious works from happening.
According to Hindu mythology, no auspicious or valuable work should be done during the effective days of Kharmas as this time the sun speeds down. The time period is not regarded as a good one for any special occasion or special work and if done may lead to difficulties. Various types of dos and don'ts are associated with the month of Malamas.
The Kharmas is believed to be the month where one should not go forward with auspicious works. As the planet, Jupiter is considered as an integral part of auspicious marriage programs and during Kharmas the Jupiter approaches towards the sun and its activities and power decrease and therefore in such conditions no auspicious work is done.
Jupiter is regarded as child wellbeing and happiness and also a happy married life by many people and therefore this Kharmas month has special consideration of giving a pause to all the auspicious works.
According to Hindu belief, the Kharmas time is not regarded as auspicious so the Hindu community avoids any important or new work during the month of Kharmas. It is also believed this month is not suitable for performing various Hindu rites such as marriages, yagnapativas and naming rites of newborns.
Hindu people from various parts of the country believe that it is an essential requirement for the guru to be strong for auspicious activities like marriage and this is why the guru does good deeds only after the end of Kharmas or Malamas.
