World Book and Copyright Day is observed each year across the globe on 23 April symbolizing world literature.
The day is celebrated in more than 100 countries in the world with the objective of honouring books and authors.
World Book and Copyright Day is marked by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) to emphasize the benefits and scopes to read books.
The theme for this year's World Book and Copyright Day is 'Read so you never feel alone.'
The concept of celebrating the day for books and authors was first Vicente Clavel Andres from Valencian to honour the author of Don Quixote, Miguel de Cervantes.
The day was first observed on 7 October marking the birth anniversary of Cervantes and the day was later shifted to 23 April marking the death anniversary of the same author.
In the year 1995, UNESCO fixed the day of 23 April for celebrating World Book and Copyright Day based on the fact that on this day many reputed owners such as William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes and Inca Garcilaso died.
The day holds great significance for authors across the country as it honours the publishing industry including libraries, publishers and booksellers.
It is the day to focus and bring awareness to the sectors like political and economic realities associated with reading and writing and also to address contemporary challenges.
World Book Day also means to fight the inequalities that lead to various issues in society and combat inequalities.
The scopes of books are also recognized to understand the link between the future and the past and the link between generations and culture.
