Eating Out
Over the last couple of years, we have recorded the rise of a number of bistros or cafes in the region. One popular café which has come up in the Six Mile-Khanapara area of Guwahati is Café Wings. Located in the Six Mile Jayanagar area opposite the NRL petrol pump, Cafe Wings has come up as a breath of fresh air to the otherwise mundane food scenario in that particular area. With very few proper eateries in the area, this cafe has quickly established itself and has become quite popular amongst the youth of that area.
A café with a rather small frontage, one might have a tough time locating it. But once you locate it, it is a world of its own, perfect for one to relax and unwind over a cup of coffee or meal of his or her choice. The cafe is the brainchild of three enterprising professionals, and who are incidentally also family members, Lorentz Krishna Baruah, Anima Kundu and Prashant Kundu.
Elaborating on the concept, Lorentz Krishna Baruah says, "We are foodies at heart and always dreamt of opening our own cafe."
The first thing that strikes one as he or she enters the place is the interiors. The entire cafe is very spacious and artistically decorated. The layout of the interiors is nice and one gets a very positive feeling right from the moment he or she enters. "The interiors have been designed by Anima Kundu, who is a professional interior designer herself. We have tried to give a Bohemian feel and style to the entire cafe," says Baruah.
Two rows of artistically designed furniture are laid out on the floor for the guests to sit and enjoy their coffee and meal. The cafe has provisions for bean bags and tyre bags (bags made out of old tyres), which seem to have become the norm of the cafes here in the city. The bamboo works of the restaurant are commendable and the roof, which is decorated with thatched bamboo and ropes, is a sight to watch out for.
So while the beautifully decorated interiors lift one's mood right from the moment he or she enters, the courteous behaviour of the staff and the wonderful quality of the food makes dining here a pleasant experience. At present, the place has a seating capacity of around 60-70 people.
Coming to the food, this is the kind of food that has become popular in the city only in recent times. While the menu is very similar to those one finds in a cafe nowadays, it is still a very nicely selected menu, offering an eclectic range of dishes.
Lorentz took us through their menu and said that they serve almost all the conventional food items like shakes, pastas, burgers, sandwiches, coffees, wraps, and the likes. However, according to him, the USP of the restaurant was their 'Drums of Heaven' and signature-style dish 'Drums of Hell'. As he says, "We serve jumbo Chicken leg pieces in our Drums of Heaven, which one will not find anywhere else in Guwahati. Another innovative item which we have started is 'Drums of Hell'. It is based on a recipe similar to 'Drums of Heaven' except for the fact that we use a wide range of chillies and also our Bhwt Jolokiya while preparing it." Totally spicy, this one is really unique and is also a huge favourite amongst the customers!
Giving his opinion about the food, a customer Jnanesh Deka said, "This is really a beautiful place to be. The ambience of the place is just above perfect. The colour of the place adds more to the quality of the place and its ambience. The price is reasonable when u compare it with the quality, quantity, ambience and behaviour of the waiting staff. I was not sure about the place but to my surprise, the level of comfort and happiness it gave me is just too awesome to express in words. Coming to the food part, i ordered, chicken Dumplings , Chicken Alfredo , a cappuccino and an espresso. The dumplings are really bigger and tastier. The alfredo was really good too. I am really happy to taste the delicacies. There is nothing to be suggested on my part. I particularly liked one more thing , the presentation of the dish u order and the behaviour of the waiter that served us. Its been a long time that i rated 5 star for a cafe. The space is just perfect for a bigger group. Its really spacious and on my enquiry i got to know that you can reserve particular places or corners of the cafe for anniversaries, birthdays etc by paying Rs 1000 for the decoration and if we need the cake too then we have to inform them before hand so that they can get time for that. Moreover when asked, its not like that you have to make a reservation, its upto u whether u want them to do the decorations or u want to do it yourself. I would just recomend everyone viewing my review to have a visit soon."
While the aesthetic design of the cafe already creates a desirable ambience, the quality of the food served here is superb. Most of the customers who returned found the food to be quite delicious and well served. The pricing is also reasonable and is one of the reasons which make it popular amongst the younger lot.
