Assam has 126 hon'ble MLAs apart from 14 hon'ble members of Lok Sabha and seven hon'ble members of Rajya Sabha. Additionally, the state also has another hon'ble member in Rajya Sabha who happens to be a nominee of the President. Several lakh people – 16 to 18 lakh – who had gone out to other states in search of livelihood in the past eight to ten years and had found some kind of employment or the other are suddenly faced with a severe crisis. Most jobs being either of temporary or casual nature, several lakh people have suddenly become jobless. The lockdown has forced many factories and other establishments to shut down. Those which have reopened after a gap of two months have reduced their workforce. The kind of jobs these lakhs of people from the region were into in far-away states do not fetch them very high salaries or wages; other benefits like healthcare, insurance, provident fund etc are generally absent. Moreover, since all of them have to send money to their parents and family back in their respective villages, they are hardly left with any savings. Whatever little sum they had with them had already been exhausted in paying rents and buying food. Local shopkeepers have begun refusing provisions to them on credit. In most places, landlords have asked them to vacate rooms. Though the Assam Government had announced that such people would be sent Rs 2000 each, the large majority of them have reportedly not received it. Given this stark reality, these people are left with few options, like walking back home, take to begging, or starve wherever they are. A few of them have already committed suicide. There are several questions that one can ask: How many of our hon'ble MLAs and MPs have come forward to help these people? How many of the hon'ble MLAs in particular know how many persons from her or his constituency are working outside and are currently facing a serious crisis of life and death? Isn't it the duty of the hon'ble MLAs and MPs to help these people whose families are voters in their respective constituencies? When will our hon'ble MLAs and MPs help the lakhs of families in their respective constituencies if not now?
