Bhabesh Kalita's elevation as State BJP president is a step in the right direction. A young and fresh person in the coveted post is a good decision as the majority of voters of the State are young. As an RSS karyakarta, he has rendered his service selflessly. The other political parties should emulate BJP in this regard as bringing fresh, young, hardworking and educated people bring new ideas and designs. The BJP is ahead of other major political parties by not following family legacy culture. Today, Congress is a leading example of dynasty politics and that is one of the major drawbacks of the party. It is no harm if subsequent inheritor is capable one but in Congress 'capability' criteria is kept in the bay. The majority of the top leaders' plan is to float their wards higher in the party hierarchy. With both CM and State president being young they should be able to connect with the new generation well.

Law and religion

To control the rapid population explosion in the country, the NDA government is contemplating bringing a law to control the explosion. Without any hesitation, we all should cooperate and suggest measures to the government in this regard. Population explosion has many negative effects on the country as it puts tremendous pressure on its resources and infrastructures, environment and economy. Compared to its geographical size, the country is overpopulated, only next to China in the world. China is bigger in terms of geographical size and recent measures taken there have put brakes on population explosion. If the present trend is allowed to continue, the day is not far when we would go past China. Meanwhile, appeasement politics by Samajwadi Party is on keeping an eye on the next year's Uttar Pradesh polls. Samajwadi Party MLA Iqbal Mahmood recently said population control law is a veiled attack on the Muslim community. He went on further to say that Dalits and tribals are responsible for the population explosion in the country. Nothing good can be expected from parties like SP, RJD, CPM, Congress, etc. They will link every law with religion.

Dark days

Another masterpiece editorial published in your esteemed daily on June 26 under the above-mentioned caption depicted the untold stories of those dark days of the Emergency period from 1973 to 1975. There is no second thought that Emergency days were the darkest hours of Indian democracy. Emergency was imposed by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for her political survival by throttling all the democratic norms. One of her sycophant named Devakanta Barua, the then Congress president went further when he coined 'India is Indira, Indira is India'. Devakanta Barua a literary idol of Assam with that slogan made every sensible Asomiya hang their heads in shame. That's now history. But what amuses us that there are still some Congress leaders who blame the government of the day for the murder of democracy. They try to erect an image that the survival of democracy is at stake. Time for them is to introspect why they have been uprooted by the people even after 70 years of rule.

Petrol & diesel prices

These days, people in India have been suffering from a financial burden due to the frequent increase in the prices of petrol and diesel. Prices of petrol and diesel should be such that common men in India could afford to purchase them without feeling any financial burden. The imposition of high rates of tax is said to be a cause of the increase in the prices of petrol and diesel. While the government needs revenue, the common men in the country need freedom from a financial burden. As such, the government should take measures to make the prices of petrol and diesel cheaper than earlier. The truth is that the incomes of the people in India do not go up overnight, so, the prices of essential commodities should not go up overnight.

This should put civilized people to shame!

It made me sad and deeply exasperated to see two huge elephants roaming on the streets and eating something from a dustbin at Hatigaon, Guwahati. The elephants ate from the garbage due to utter hunger. This should put all civilized people to shame. By all accounts, men have deeply encroached on their space and left the animals in the lurch. The limitless greed of human beings is the root cause of all the ills that pervade nature. This is a stark reminder of how unscrupulous, greedy and dishonest people ruthlessly threaten their lives and livelihood. Those in power must see things in the right perspectives before it is too late.

Childhood beckons

The cropping season in Assam has started. The season when the sun is at its brightest and our farmers go through their toughest test. I remember when I was a kid I used to go to my ancestral home in Dhakuakhana in my summer vacations just when the cropping season starts. It used to be a fun-filled 30 days for me as I used to ride on top of the harrow (known locally as moey), bring back the oxen from the field, and eat lunch with farmers and much such paddy field fun. As I grew older I became distant from my ancestral home. Tuitions, classes and examinations did not allow me any chance to relive my childhood. Each year when the cropping season gets near my mind travels to those fields where my childhood resides.
