The news that noted Assamese lady singer Bhitali Das expired on April 21, 2021, has come to us like a thunderstorm. Noted Assamese singer Bhitali Das is just 42 years old, and it is beyond one's imagination that she would leave us so early for good. Of course, Almighty did not allow Bhitali Das to live longer in this world. Bhitali Das was a popular singer in Assam. She lent her voice to several thousand Bihu songs and other songs. Every Bihu song Bhitali Das had sung earned appreciation from the music lovers in Assam. Only a few Assamese lady singers can match the talent that Bhitali Das possessed in music. God will care for the soul of Bhitali Das.

The unexpected surge in COVID-19 cases has put a question mark on the government's ability to tackle this pandemic. The health system has collapsed. There is a shortage of oxygen, beds in hospitals, ventilators etc. The sufferer is left to die. When the alarm bell is ringing all over the world, our politicians are engaged in elections. The severity of the second wave was well known in advance, but the elections diverted the attention of the government machinery.

Horse-trading is a

threat to democracy

As per Wikipedia 'horse-trading', in its literal sense, is the buying and selling of horses. It is also called 'horse dealing' which has nothing wrong with it. But in politics when 'horse-trading' refers to the buying of MLAs or MPs by the powerful party to fulfil its political ambition and the people's representatives also get sold off with bargains profitable to both, it amounts to a great threat to democracy. This is a betrayal on the part of an MLA or an MP not only to the party it belongs to but also to the common voters. They expose themselves shamelessly to their opportunistic nature and more specifically their hollowness in any political ideology. Now a question arises: Can a betrayer, who has no principle of his own and only runs after money and power, have the right to become people's representative? In my opinion, it is not. He can go to any extent to fulfil his desire.

Hence it is the moral responsibility of every citizen to see that 'the politicians who turn horses' never get elected in any election in future. They are a real threat to a healthy democracy.
