Prajanmya Unmesh demands to rename constituency

Prajanmya Unmesh, the leading socio-cultural organization in Assam, has expressed strong resentment regarding the naming of the Sootea constituency. It is noteworthy to say that the majority of the population or area of Sootea constituency is located in Jamugurihat. This constituency situated on the bank of the river Bhoroli spreads in many ways, centering around Jamugurihat. So the people of this locality wholeheartedly want the name of this constituency to be “Jamugurihat”. Jamugurihat is a famous Vaishnavite centre known for the famous Baresohoria Bhaona. Moreover, the first English Bhaona was performed internationally in many countries under the banner of Prajanmya Unmesh. Prajanmya Unmesh is a noted socio-cultural organization in Assam that preaches traditional culture. Arup Saikia, the chief executive, appeals to all the people of greater Jamugurihat across all communities to move or pray to the Election Commission of India to alter their decision. Besides, Hemalata Saikia, an octogenarian social worker, requested the Baresohoria Bhaona committee to adopt a consensus proposal in this regard through a letter. Hemalata Saikia is the former state president of Sankardev Nam Dharma Aai Matri Samaj. The Baresohoria Bhaona Committee is considered the apex organization of Jamugurihat. Arup Saikia and other people of Prajanmya Unmesh stressed the necessity of meeting with the Chief Minister of the state and the Election Commission of India to rename the constituency Jamugurihat. It’s noteworthy that these organisations like Prajanmya Unmesh or Sankardev Nam Dharma Aai Matri Samaj are satisfied with the delimitation area or change of demography.

Another annual event

In Assam, there are two main annual festivals, namely the Bihu and Durga Puja. People of all ages, creed, castes, and religions take part, forgetting their daily woes. But as an old Asomiya, I do feel that yet another event, called ‘Flood, should also be included in the main annual event calendar of the state. We all know that successive governments over the years have tried their best to make the state flood-free by constructing many embankments along the river banks, which always breach with the advent of the monsoon. So, my humble suggestion and advice to the people of Assam is to include floods as yet another annual event of the state and to teach us to co-exist with floods every year.

This will save the government’s revenues and the agony of the MLAs, MPs, and ministers, and it will also make us flood-friendly. I hope my letter will receive due attention.

Dr. Ashim Chowdhury,

Guwahati.
