Letters to The EDITOR

When the BJP-led NDA took the rein of power from the Congress in Assam all people of Assam heaved a sigh of relief with optimism that the administration under the new BJP-led coalition would ring down the curtain over corruption. But it pains us to note as days roll by corruption under the Sarbananda Sonowal-led government becomes more and more rampant. We come across news about the tale of corruption both in the electronic as well as in the print media day in, day out. We had reports regarding involvement of a few ministers as well. Nobody can forget the recruitment scam that rocked the DRDA in the State under minister Naba Kumar Doley. Further, we can make mention of Ranjit Dutta and Rihang Daimari.

In our opinion, the BJP-led government in Assam forfeits its right to proffer even a ‘Safai’ in its defence. The different syndicates plaguing the state could have been nipped in the bud, had the government exerted its might judiciously. We note with concerns that despite much hullabaloo the supari, cow, khoir and forest products syndicates are going on unabated. What is more certain that some BJP leaders are accomplices. As if all these scams are not enough. Now, the PDS scam at Karimganj projects a corrupt picture of the State. That apart, we could view in the electronic media, how new pitched roads built can be removed by layers, how toilets for the poor people (DRDA) are built elsewhere, how Arunachali liquor is sold like hotcakes despite police bandobast. It seems, the ghosts of corruption are constantly running after the people of Assam.
