MUMBAI: Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan got stamped with ink to spread awareness about home quarantine to prevent spread of coronavirus.

In the midst of coronavirus scare, Maharashtra state government has decided to stamp the left hand of coronavirus suspects under home quarantine.

According to the Health Minister of the state, the left hand of the coronavirus suspects in-home quarantine will be stamped so that they can be easily identified.

The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by the Chief Minister of the State, Uddhav Thackeray. The government said that this would be a precautionary measure for them as more than 35 cases of coronavirus were detected in the state so far and seven suspected patients have escaped from the treatment centers in the last few days. The government is planning to implement more efficient steps to control the spread.

Anyone violating the compulsory quarantine or even breaking home quarantine would forcefully be moved to government isolation facility, the government stated.

Pravin Pardeshi, Greater Mumbai’s Municipal Commissioner has also issued an order to all officials at airports and hospitals to stamp the left hand of the suspected person.

The stamp also has dates of isolation with ink lasting for 14 days. The Chief Minister also said to home quarantine people to avoid public spaces and prevent the spread of highly contagious disease.

“It is not a crime if somebody is infected by Covid-19. They must be given proper medical treatment and psychological support. The Epidemic Diseases Act has been invoked in the interest of the people and the district administration must create awareness on it,” the Chief Minister said.

For now, the Maharashtra government has also withheld breath analyzer tests that are done to check drunk drivers in an attempt to protect police from contracting the disease.

All the mass gatherings have been banned for now, the Chief Minister added.
