NEW DELHI: Akshay Kumar's latest film, "Mission Raniganj: The Great Bharat Rescue," directed by Tinu Suresh Desai, faced a challenging journey at the domestic box office following its release on October 6. Despite this, the film has taken a bold step by independently submitting itself for consideration at the Oscars in 2024.

"Mission Raniganj" brings to life the remarkable true story of Jaswant Singh Gill, portrayed by Akshay Kumar. Gill is the unsung hero who valiantly saved 65 miners trapped inside a flooded coal mine in Raniganj, West Bengal, in 1989.

The filmmakers behind "Mission Raniganj" have officially submitted the film to the prestigious Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts & Sciences, the organization responsible for the acclaimed Oscars. However, it's important to note that as an independent submission, the film will not be eligible to compete in the category of Best Foreign Film.

Similar to SS Rajamouli's "RRR," "Mission Raniganj" will have the opportunity to compete across all other major award categories, including Best Picture and Best Director, at the Oscars.

This compelling cinematic venture boasts an ensemble cast featuring Akshay Kumar, Parineeti Chopra, Kumud Mishra, Pavan Malhotra, Ravi Kishan, Varun Badola, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Rajesh Sharma, Virendra Saxena, Shishir Sharma, Ananth Mahadevan, Jameel Khan, Sudhir Pandey, Bachan Pachera, Mukesh Bhatt, and Omkar Das Manikpuri.

"Mission Raniganj" serves as a poignant tribute to the unyielding resilience, indomitable determination, and extraordinary bravery of the human spirit and the innovative minds of engineers who strive to make the impossible possible.

Notably, this film marks the second collaboration between Akshay Kumar and director Tinu Suresh Desai, following their earlier project "Rustom," which earned Akshay Kumar his first National Award for his outstanding performance.

In an industry where box office success often dictates a film's journey, "Mission Raniganj" boldly takes a different route by pursuing recognition on the international stage of the Oscars, drawing attention to a powerful true story of heroism that transcends borders and cultures.
