The psychological drama film the Lost Daughter directed and written by Maggie Gyllenhaal is an adaptation of Elena Ferrante's novel with the same title.

The film was made available to watch online on giant OTT platform Netflix on 31 December 2021 and is regarded as the best last great Netflix movie of 2021.

The story of the 121 minutes long drama film revolves around complex dynamics associated with motherhood. It explains that in certain situations the relationship and bonding between daughter and mother can get really difficult and tense and such circumstances often result in wrong decisions by both.

This Netflix new drama 'The Lost Daughter' is open to interpretation which is unpredictable, unsettling, and unnerving. It is based on the painful efforts of motherhood that take an emotional turn. The IMDb rating of the film is 6.8 out of 10.

Olivia Colman as the lead character named Leda in the drama sparkles and stands out with her attractive performance. Dakota Johnson plays another lead character in the film named Nina who has a tacky daughter named Elena and a possessive husband.

Olivia Colman as Leda appears as an ambitious literature professor who runs into her youth memories during a vacation in Seaside town of Italy. The woman is confronted by the troubles of her past after meeting a mother-daughter duo on her vacation.

A relationship develops between Nina and Leda and the film takes the audience to a flashback which reveals the messy emotions of Leda's motherhood days towards her two daughters filled with anxiety and guilt that haunts working mother.

Leda meets the family Nina on the beachside and the next day the young girl goes missing. This reminds Leda about losing her own daughter at the beach and then the scenes of young Leda rolls in the film. While coming back in the present days Leda is seen returning to her car along with the stolen doll of Elena.

Ending: On knowing Nina's affair with a café man, Leda shares her past with Nina that she left her husband and two daughters. She reveals that Elena's doll was stolen by her and this leaves Nina in shock which led her to stab Leda. Leda then leaves the apartment and drives away meeting a car accident next to the Sea and she was seen waking up with water lapped on her face receiving her daughter's phone call.

The musical part of the film by Dickon Hinchliffe made it more engaging along with Cinematography by Helene Louvart who creates a different mood. The drama is produced by Endeavor Content, Samuel Marshall Productions and Pie Films productions. The Lost Daughter was earlier released in theatres on 16 December 2021.
