NEW DELHI: More than 13 people have been reported to have been killed and hundreds injured when an earthquake of magnitude 6.5 hit Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan on the night of Tuesday. Tremors were felt in several parts of India including the capital city New Delhi.
The source of the tremor which took place at 10:17 PM is said to be 61 km from Eshkashem in Tajikistan
Around 9 people were reported by government officials on Wednesday in the northwestern part of Pakistan and nearly 50 people have been injured. Medical facilities in the northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province were put in a state of emergency following the tremours.
An official from the health ministry of Afghanistan mentioned that the country has seen atleast 4 deaths and 50 injured in incidents related to the tremours. The epicentre was about 40 km southeast of Jurm in Afghanistan and the region saw major damages due to the tremor.
The tremors were felt by people over an area more than 1000 km away. And about 280 million people across India, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan felt the tremors.
The Meteorological Department of Pakistan recorded an intensity of 6.8 in the main earthquake, followed by a 3.7 intensity aftershock originating in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan. The officials with the emergency response services of Pakistan mentioned that the roofs of several houses had collapsed leading to multiple deaths.
Landslides were also reported in the Swat district of the country which is about 200 kilometres from the capital of the country. While the Prime Minister called on the disaster management officials of Pakistan and ordered to remain vigilant during the aftermath of the earthquake.
Tremors were felt in the state of Kashmir in India along with several other parts. People rushed out of their homes out of fear, but no loss of life was reported.
