China Rejects Sanctions on Terrorist Abdul Rauf Azhar in UNSC

NEW YORK: Maintaining its support towards the Pakistan-based terrorist organisations which aim to create disturbance in India, the Chinese have rejected India’a demand to list the commander of Pakistan-based Jaish Abdul Rauf Azhar as a terrorist at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). This action saves the terrorist from being declared a fugitive in multiple nations and only a fresh proposal can bring up the agenda again for consideration but after significant delays.

This proposal was filed last year by India and supported by the United States to list Abdul Rauf Azhar in the UN Security Council 1267 Sanctions Committee. This is not the first time that China has obstructed or blocked the listing of Pakistani terrorists in the 1267 Sanctions Committees providing indirect support and protection towards the terrorists.

Abdul Rauf Azhar is the deputy chief of Jaish-i-Mohammad and the younger brother of its founder Masood Azhar. This terror outfit is known for its involvement in several terrorist attacks, including the hijacking of an Indian Airlines aircraft in 1999, the attack on the Indian Parliament in 2001, and the attack on an Indian Air Force base in 2016 making Abdul Rauf Azhar one of the most wanted people in India.

The Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar criticised China last year for their actions towards obstructing justice and protecting the Pakistani terrorist groups from being prosecuted by the United Nations. He also emphasized on the need for the Security Council to convey a message that political consideration should not be used to evade the responsibilities of providing protection while mentioning how the Security Council failed to sanction some of the most notorious terrorists that the world has seen because of political considerations.

It remains to see if India decided to file another demand to add the terrorist to the sanctions list.
