NEW DELHI: Former US President Donald Trump on Tuesday was ordered to pay $5 million to a woman who accused him of sexual abuse and defamation in a legal defeat. However, the jury did not find Trump guilty of rape, as the lady claimed, but did find him guilty of sexual abuse and defamation.

Because it was a civil case, he was not sentenced to prison. Donald Trump was found guilty of defaming the woman by labelling her a "hoax" in a jury verdict. The jury rejected her rape claim but found him guilty of sexual abuse and defamation.

E Jean Carroll, 79, brought the action against Trump, the Republican Party's front-runner for president next year, alleging that he assaulted her while she was a columnist for Elle magazine around 1996, but she wasn't sure when it happened.

However, Trump said he would appeal as he termed the verdict as “continuing of the greatest witchhunt of all time”. When the decision was read, there was a big gathering outside the courthouse protesting his treatment of women.

It is the first time Donald Trump has faced a court trial over sexual assault charges after less than three hours of judgement.

Carroll was granted $2 million after the jury concluded that she had proven sexual abuse (essentially sexual contact without consent) by a preponderance of the evidence.

Former entrepreneur Jessica Leeds claimed Trump touched her in the business class section of a flight in the 1970s.

Natasha Stoynoff, a journalist, claimed Trump kissed her without her consent during an interview at his Mar-a-Lago home in 2005.

Several dozen women accused Trump of sexual misconduct prior to his election to the presidency in 2016.

Twitter banned then-President Donald Trump for encouraging violence in 2021. In January 2021, Mr Trump's account was banned for 12 hours after he labelled the people who seized the US Capitol "patriots."

Hundreds of his supporters descended on the building as the US Congress attempted to confirm Joe Biden's presidential election victory. Four civilians and a police officer were killed in the ensuing fighting.
