Guwahati: The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has ordered the countries on Friday to step up the fight against terror financing by ensuring that they have laws to make it a serious crime.

The Council generally adopted the draft resolution of France that calls on nations to ensure that their domestic laws and regulations establish serious criminal offences to prosecute those who collect funds or provide economic resources to terror organizations or terrorists.

The French-drafted resolution also urged the countries to establish financial intelligence units to strengthen efforts to track terrorism financing which can be enforced with sanctions and to share information on their investigations.

The UNSC's step to fight against terror financing is the first standalone measure dedicated specifically to counter the financing of terrorism. The decision of UNSC to fight against terror financing has been welcomed by India which has been pushing for action against countries that support terror in its diplomatic offensive against Pakistan. India also stressed on effective implementation of the measures taken by UNSC.

India's Permanent Representative to the UN, Syed Akbaruddin says that India is a 'willing partner' in the endeavour and hit out at Pakistan in a reference to serial offenders who are apologists for terrorists.

Akbaruddin said that terrorists are going to be ever more creative in finding ways to violate the rulebook. He further said that the states who are apologists for terrorists will continue to provide alibis to justify their actions and inaction too. Speaking at the UN, Akbaruddin said that the world body collectively needs to do more and much more effectively to combat terrorism and against those who finance the groups.

He also stated that the UNSC can do a better job and it needs to do for overseeing the implementation of its resolutions relating to terrorist financing.

Akbaruddin further tweeted saying, "New milestone adopted by UN to counter terrorist financing challenges from terror organizations who are well-funded and armed despite international measures."

He also welcomed the recognition of the essential role of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) in the UN resolution which can ratchet pressure on more than 50 countries to pass new legislation on countering terror financing.
