GUWAHATI: In Aceh region of Indonesia, female flogging squad has been recruited to impart punishment to women charged with moral offenses.

According to reports, the first punishment was administered to an unmarried woman found in a hotel with a man.

The female recruit in charge of administering punishment seemed hesitant at first but with a bit of coaxing, she whipped the offender.

Aceh region of Indonesia is governed by Sharia law.

'I think she did a good job. Her technique was nice,' Banda Aceh Sharia police chief investigator Zakwan, who uses one name, told AFP.

In this area of the country, whipping in public remains a punishment for those found guilty of adultery, drinking alcohol, and having gay or pre-marital sex as well as gambling, according to reports.

Last year, the Sultanate of Brunei brought into force severe punishments under a new penal code based on sharia or Islamic law, including death by stoning or amputation applied to crimes such as theft, sodomy or adultery. The reform of the penal code, which was first officially announced by Sultan and Prime Minister Hassanal Bolkiah, does not appear in any of the media of the small Southeast Asian nation, reports Efe news. The new laws include death by stoning for sodomy and adultery, amputation of the hand or foot for theft, and whipping for sexual intimacy between women among others. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet had said that the implementation of these laws “would mark a serious setback for human rights protections for the people of Brunei”
