Rare Shelly's Eagle Owl Sighted In Ghana's Atewa Forest After 150 Years

Accra: A rare species of owl has been spotted in the Atewa Forest in Ghana. The rare species of the owl is named Shelly's Eagle Owl and has been sighted after 150 years.

The last time the rare species was sighted was in 1872 by a local hunter.

This time the bird was spotted by two British ecologists who were conducting research in Ghana's Atewa Forest. 

The Shelly's Eagle Owl is considered to be an indigenous bird found in Central and West Africa.

This discovery has revealed the richness of the biodiversity of the Atewa Forest and can prove to be helpful to protect and conserve the forest. The photograph of the owl has been credited to Dr Robert Williams.

This news was reported by a page on Twitter called "ghanaspora". The tweet read, "First confirmed sighting of an extremely rare owl in Ghana's Atewa Forest in 150 years. Two British ecologists conducting research in the forest recently saw the Shelley's Eagle Owl (indigenous to Central & West Africa). The discovery could prompt the Atewa Forest to be protected."
