SAN FRANCISCO: A mass shooting that happened in Mission District of San Francisco resulted in nine people being wounded on Friday night, in an incident that police said appeared to be a "targeted and isolated" one.

According to a report in The San Francisco Chronicle, it was stated that the shooting incident occurred shortly after 9 PM during a party organised by a clothing store near the intersection of 24th Street and Treat Avenue.

Initially, it was stated by the San Francisco Police Department that all of the victims were expected to survive their injuries. But a later statement released by the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital said that one of the victims continued to remain in a critical condition till Saturday afternoon.

While one more victim was said to be in serious condition, four of them were in a fair condition and the other three were already discharged from the hospital. The victims included eight men and one woman with their ages ranging from 20 to 34, said the hospital.

City Police Chief William Scott said that the violence was "unacceptable."

Scott said that people should feel safe while going out in San Francisco and be without fear of becoming victims of gun violence. "Our investigators are working diligently on this case, and we will have a visible police presence moving forward in the community where this occurred," he added.

A clothing store named Dying Breed, which is located near the intersection where the shooting incident happened, was slated to hold its sixth anniversary celebrations on Friday night with a block party, according to a post on the Instagram account of the store.

When called up, a person who had answered the phone at the store refused to comment on the incident.

San Francisco's Mission District is one of oldest neighborhoods in the city and is named after the Mission Dolores, which is a Spanish mission dating back to 1776. Although historically considered a Latino area, with increased gentrifying in recent years, this vibrant area currently has numerous restaurants and shops.

The city’s Mayor London Breed said that first responders were swift to react to the shooting and observed that "no lives were lost."

Breed said, "I know there are a lot of questions and concerns in the community, and people want answers,".

He further said that they are still working to understand what actually happened, its reason and promised to share information as soon it was available.
