Snapchat Bans President Donald Trump Permanently

NEW DELHI: Snapchat announced that it will permanently ban US President Donald Trump's account from January 20.

The Republican president is due to hand over to Democratic President-elect Joe Biden on Jan. 20.

According to Reuters, Snap had announced an indefinite suspension of the account following the violent unrest at the Capitol last week.

The statement added, "in the interest of public safety, and based on his attempts to spread misinformation, hate speech, and incite violence."

Earlier, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook also decided to boycott the outgoing President.

"In light of concerns about the ongoing potential for violence, we removed new content uploaded to Donald J. Trump's channel for violating our policies," YouTube said in a statement.

Trump's channel has been "temporarily prevented from uploading new content for a minimum of 7 days," the statement read.

YouTube also said it would be "indefinitely disabling comments" on Trump's channel because of safety concerns.

On Twitter, Donald Trump's handle is now an almost empty white canvas, frozen at 51 followed accounts, 88.7 million followers and two words on the centre of the screen saying "Account suspended".

Meanwhile, just hours after his personal Twitter account was permanently suspended, President Trump said he would be looking into building his own social media platform.

Twitter later deleted the tweet and also suspended his @TeamTrump campaign account shortly after it sent out a tweet with a "statement from President Trump" accusing Twitter of "banning free speech" and coordinating with "the Democrats and the Radical Left" to silence him.

The deleted tweet reads, "Twitter is not about FREE SPEECH. They are all about promoting a Radical Left platform where some of the most vicious people in the world are allowed to speak freely..."

Facebook Inc said earlier this week it was suspending his account through until at least the end of his presidential term. Twitter also permanently banned two Trump loyalists – former national security adviser Michael Flynn and attorney Sidney Powell – as part of a broader purge of accounts promoting the QAnon conspiracy theory.
