Taliban Imposes Harsh, Strict and Regressive Laws in Districts Captured in Afghanistan

According to reports, the Taliban has imposed new laws and regulations in newly seized areas in Afghanistan's northern province of Takhar, ordering women not to leave their homes alone and males to grow their beards, among other diktats.

According to Ariana News, civil society activists in Takhar claim that the Taliban have also imposed dowry requirements on girls.

In a statement, they encouraged ladies not to go without a relative (Moharam) and also advised males to wear beards, as per Merajuddin Sharifi, a civil society activist in Takhar, was reported by Ariana News as saying. Sharifi further stated that theTaliban insist on no-evidence trials.

In the past, the Taliban enforced an aggressive form of Islamic authority. Before the US-led invasion in 2001, they banned girls from attending school and women from working outside their homes, as well as preventing them from going out in public without a male relative. Those who broke the restrictions were frequently humiliated and beaten in public by the Taliban's religious police.

As international forces depart from the war-torn country, the Taliban has escalated its attack against civilians and government defence and security forces, seizing control of numerous districts around the country.

According to Ariana News, which cited persons acquainted with the situation, the militia captured Tagab district in Kapisa province on Thursday. 

Residents in Taliban-controlled regions must also pay extra for food, according to Takhar provincial council members, according to Ariana News.  "People are facing problems there; services are nonexistent, clinics, and schools are closed," said Mohammad Azam Afzali, a member of the provincial council, to Ariana News.

According to Takhar governor Abdullah Qarluq, the Taliban have damaged government buildings and cut off services in Taliban-controlled regions. . "They (Taliban) looted everything, and no services exist," Qarluq explained.

According to Ariana News, the Taliban has disputed the accusations, calling them propaganda against the group.
