Guwahati: Thai Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya Sirivadhana Barnavadi wanted to run for the prime ministerial position in her country but had to face quick opposition by her brother, the king of the country. However, what is relieving and a matter to cheer for her is that she got some supporters who backed her decision.
Stating her decision for Thailand to be "moving forward" for which she took this sudden decision of contesting for the prime ministerial position. The shocking statement by the Thai princess was announced on Friday when she said that she will be contesting for a populist party loyal to ousted ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra. The country is to undergo the elections on March 24.
However, the 67-year-old Thai princess’ entry into politics would mean breaking her family traditions as royal blood does not compete or join politics. Hence, her decision to join politics was immediately denied and opposed by her brother who is also the king of the nation.
The Thai Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya, who also is the elder sister of Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn, has been nominated by the Thai Raksa Chart Party. However, the public opposition from her younger brother, King Maha Vajiralongkorn also makes it unsure as to whether the princess will be contesting for the prime minister position or not. In fact, the leaders of the Thai Raksa Chart party are not making any comment over this matter and have cancelled a campaign event planned for Saturday.
The public statement on the princess’ decision to join politics made by King Vajiralongkorn, 66, states that his elder sister's candidacy was "inappropriate" and this is against the spirit of the constitution for royalty as they cannot be involved in politics.
The final say will be made by the Election Commission. However, this is almost certain that the EC will not speak against the strong and powerful opinion made by the king and will eventually, cancel Rajakanya’s candidature.
The Thai princess, on seeing huge support from her supporters, thanks them all in an Instagram post on Saturday, for their "love and kindness toward each other over the past day."
