NEW YORK: To realise Elon Musk’s dream of making Twitter an ‘everything app’, the social media giant may now in the process of readying itself to compete with WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram etc.
For accomplishing this, Twitter is now coming up with its own voice and video calls features along with other things, according to Elon Musk’s latest announcement.
Taking to his Twitter handle, Elon Musk announced that Twitter is soon starting its voice and video call features to aid conversation with anyone and everyone on the platform.
“Coming soon will be voice and video chat from your handle to anyone on this platform, so you can talk to people anywhere in the world without giving them your phone number,” Elon Musk tweeted.
The idea behind the move is aimed at aiding conversations among people without having the need to share phone numbers.
The SpaceX and Tesla CEO in his tweet, also announced that Twitter will also be releasing encrypted ‘DMs V1.0’, which is similar to WhatsApp and other messaging apps,. However, he pointed out that this feature would have a rapid growth in ‘sophistication’.
He said, “With latest version of app, you can DM reply to any message in the thread (not just most recent) and use any emoji reaction. Release of encrypted DMs V1.0 should happen tomorrow. This will grow in sophistication rapidly. The acid test is that I could not see your DMs even if there was a gun to my head.”
In reply to Elon Musk’s big announcement, a verified Twitter user Wall Street Silver wrote, “This makes Twitter a serious replacement for WhatsApp, Signal and many other apps. Great job!”
Another Twitter user also congratulated Musk on his idea of having voice and video features on Twitter and said, “The success of Twitter is the success of free speech. If Twitter adds all these features and starts becoming essentially a tv news channel and it works well, it’s going to explode.”
