KYIV: According to British officials, Ukraine is currently engaged in a counteroffensive against Russian forces occupying certain areas, resulting in a significant number of military casualties for both sides. The most intense fighting is reported to be taking place in Bakhmut in the southeastern Zaporizhzhia province and the eastern Donetsk province.

British intelligence suggests that Russian losses are likely at their highest level since the peak of the battle for Bakhmut in March. Ukrainian forces have made small advances while being on the offensive, but Russian forces have been engaging in relatively effective defensive operations in the south of Ukraine.

The Ukrainian military reported that in the previous 24 hours, Russia had launched 51 attacks using multiple rocket launchers, 43 airstrikes, and four missile strikes. The General Staff of Ukraine stated that Russia continues to focus its efforts on hostile operations in the industrial east of Ukraine, with the most significant clashes occurring in Bakhmut, Avdiivka, Marinka, and Lyman in Donetsk territory.

Civilian casualties have also been reported. Two civilians were killed and three others were wounded in the past day according to Pavlo Kyrylenko, the governor of the Donetsk region. Russian airstrikes in Kherson province resulted in the death of one civilian and the injuries of four others. In Zaporizhzhia, Russian attacks on 20 settlements caused the injury of one person.

Ukrainian forces have gained control of the village of Piatykhatky in the Zaporizhzhia battlefront. Ukrainian regional governors have reported successful operations, including the destruction of a significant ammunition depot near the Russian-occupied port city of Henichesk by Ukrainian forces.

Western analysts and military officials believe that Ukraine's counteroffensive, utilizing advanced weapons supplied by Western countries, could last a long time as they attempt to dislodge Russian forces from occupied areas along the 1,000-kilometer front line.

In recent days, a group of African leaders visited Russia and Ukraine on a peace mission to help end the ongoing wars. However, the visit concluded without immediate progress.

Incidents of shelling and border clashes continue to occur. The governor of Ukraine's northern Sumy region claimed that Russian shelling resulted in the deaths of a father and son in the village of Bilopilya. Russian officials reported Ukrainian shelling in three villages across the border.

Flooding caused by the destruction of the Kakhovka dam resulted in casualties on both sides. The Ukrainian interior ministry reported 16 deaths in Ukrainian-held territory, while Russian officials reported 29 deaths in Moscow-controlled areas.

Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the Wagner mercenary group, claimed that 32,000 former prisoners had returned home after their contracts with Wagner in Ukraine ended. Prigozhin, who has recruited fighters from Russian prisons, stated that these individuals committed fewer crimes compared to those who were released without joining Wagner.

Overall, the situation in Ukraine remains tense, with ongoing clashes and casualties on both sides. The counteroffensive by Ukrainian forces and the conflict with Russian forces in occupied areas are expected to continue, with no immediate resolution in sight.
