US Senate Passes Resolution Regarding the International Border of India and China

WASHINGTON: A Bipartisan Senate Resolution has been passed in the United States announcing the recognition of the McMahon Line as the international border between the countries of India and China. It also recognised the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh as an integral part of India.

“At a time when China continues to pose grave and gathering threats to the Free and Open Indo-Pacific, it is critical for the United States to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our strategic partners in the region, especially India,” mentioned Senator Bill Hagerty who introduced the bill in the Senate with Senator Jeff Merkley. This resolution is co-sponsored by Senator John Cornyn.

Senator Bill Hagerty also mentioned on Tuesday that this bipartisan resolution expresses the full support of the Senate towards the recognition of the State of Arunachal Pradesh as a part of India. It also condemns China’s military aggression towards the change in the status quo along the Line of Actual Control. This step also aims to enhance the US - India strategic partnership said the senator.

This resolution comes at a time when Chinese army personnel has tried to invade Indian soil multiple times and one of the most recent violations took place in the state of Arunachal Pradesh, near the town of Tawang. The resolution is also a blunt blow to the Chinese government who has claimed the state of Arunachal Pradesh, especially the upper stretches as a party of its territory as a part of its aggressive expansionist policies.

“America’s values supporting freedom and a rules-based order must be at the centre of all of our actions and relationships around the world, especially as the PRC government pushes an alternative vision,” Senator Jeff Merkley added.

It also condemns the provocative actions of the Chinese Army which include the attempts to push the international border, the construction of villages in these contested areas and the publication of maps with these areas inside Chinese territory.
