New York:

Walmart is launching new software for its employees and presenting them with a new Samsung phone to use with it.

By the end of the year, more than half of the retailer's US workers, or 740,000 people, would have received a free phone for personal and professional use. The phone, a Samsung Galaxy XCover Pro, is normally $499, and Walmart is also supplying a cover and protection package to employees.

Walmart stated that the phone would be mostly used for its new employee app, Me@Walmart, which is intended to  "simplify daily tasks, serve our customers and plan for life outside of work" according to a statement.

The app includes features such as scheduling, signing in to their shift, and a voice-activated personal assistant for work that  "saves time by letting associates ask the app questions to quickly locate merchandise and get answers for customers."

Walmart (WMT) maintains it has no access to any personal data on the phone and that workers may only use the app when working. Prior to this initiative, Walmart employees were required to share company-owned smartphones, and the initial test using personal phones was deemed "good."

According to the company's press release, "as retail continues to evolve — and quickly — it's more critical than ever to equip our people with the tools and technology they need for success."

Smartphones are Walmart's most recent technical breakthrough. The nation's largest retailer recently revealed plans to create automated mini-warehouses in dozens of its locations to expedite online delivery and curbside pickup orders for consumers.
