Shillong has emerged
as one of the educational hubs of Northeast India in recent years. The state
has one of the best colleges in the country like IIM Shillong, NIFT Shillong,
age-old St. Edmund's College, St. Anthony's College, and more. There has been
an increasing inflow of students from the other states of the North East to
Meghalaya for Higher Education every year. The colleges in Shillong are
affiliated with the North-Eastern Hill University.
The State has the best of Missionary Schools and schools like Loreto Convent and Pine Mount have produced notable alumni in the past years. The Meghalaya Board of School Education board operates in the State, along with CBSE and ICSE Board of Education.

Established in the year 1924 Saint Edmund is one of the oldest colleges in the state and holds the record for being the 2nd oldest in northeast India. Over the years the college has grown in every aspect and holds a prestigious name in the region attracting bright minds to join the institution every year. It now offers a diverse range of courses ranging from Biotechnology to Computer Science, Environmental Science, and Bachelor of Social Work, etc.
Notable Alumni
Many dignified personalities have studied in St. Edmund's and
have grown up to be famous personalities in diverse fields. Some notable alumni
of the college being Dan Abnett (author), Samira Ahmed (radio news presenter),
Steve Blinkhorn (psychologist), Emma Brockes (journalist), Lionel Barber
(editor of Financial Times).
The college was established in the year 1934 and is 87 years old. It has also received a 5 star accreditation from NAAC for the first time in the North Eastern Region in the past. Some of the notable alumni of the college are Lok Sabha speaker P A Sangma, Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary one of the governors of Meghalaya, IAS Officer Sri C.K Das, etc.
Loreto Convent is one of the premier all-girls schools in Shillong and has been imparting education since the year 1909. It is a Catholic Institution and is located in Dhankheti, Lachumiere, Shillong. The school is managed by the Sisters of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary (IBVM).
Pine Mount is an all-girls school and is affiliated under CISCE (Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination). It was established in the year 1990. The Institution is a day cum residential school and has a beautiful campus adorned with pine trees and various other trees.
National Institute of Fashion Technology, Shillong, which was founded in 2008, is ranked third among the top NIFT institutes. Situated in a transit campus of old North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS Campus) over a 5-acre land the management is looking forward to shifting to their permanent campus at Umsawli which boats a campus size of over 20 acres. This permanent campus would be part of the new Shillong Township which already hosts prestigious social entities such as the United Nations Resource Centre, English, and foreign language universities, IHM, IIM, etc. Hostel facilities are also available for students. Almost 90 percentages of students get placed by the 2 years of course. Being 3rd on the list of top NIFT'S, NIFT Shillong is living up to its reputation.
Established in the year 2007, it was the seventh Indian Institute of Management to be set up in our country. Formerly known as Rajiv Gandhi Institute Indian Institute of Management Shillong, IIM Shillong now offers postgraduate, executive, and doctoral programs to students all across the country. The campus is situated in the southeastern suburb of Nongthymmai, it was previously the summer retreat place for the kings of the Mayurbhanj dynasty. IIM Shillong also hosts various events throughout the year some of them being, The Podium, EmergE, Golf Cup, Udaan, TEDx IIM Shillong, Melange, Nexus, etc.
North Eastern Hill University is a central university and was established in the year 1973. One of the university campuses is located in the suburbs of Shillong and one is located in Tura, Meghalaya. Every year thousands of students come to study at the University. Along with other hostel facilities, there is a separate International Hostel as well on the campus for International students.
