While adults in the rainbow spectrum are relatively self assured owing to a slew of progressive awareness campaigns etc the adolescents do need an extra ounce of assurance. Therefore Melange, caught up with some individuals who come within the ambit of the LGBTQ+ umbrella across the country and asked them to share some messages of hope and inspiration for the youngsters.
Here are eight such messages:
"You are not a male or female. You are in-between and that is perfectly ok. Always remember that you are a soul first and body second. Nothing should diminish the power of your soul. And always remember that souls are fluid, intangible and not defined by gender."- Maya Chaudhary (Lesbian from Kolkata)
"Do not be shy or embarrassed if you are having a crush on your best guy friend. Never mind that you are a guy yourself and do not overthink 'the why' of this attraction. Just go with the flow and remember that for the moment whatever you are experiencing is natural and perfect." – Namit Chaliha (Gay from Guwahati/ name changed on request)
"Well you will eventually get to surgical transition, but you don't need to wait until then to start being happy. Also, don't worry about figuring yourself out 100%. Uncertainty and fluidity aren't a crime — they make you the beautiful person you are."- Mridul Dutta (A transman from Dibrugarh)
"You are asexual. Well there is nothing wrong in being not sexually or romantically inclined towards anyone. Life has so many things beyond sex and romance. Enjoy them to the fullest and get living."- Rajashree Sharma (An Asexual woman from Guwahati)
"Well do not let your stubbornness get in the way of getting help. You have major depression and anxiety and getting medicines to help level out your brain is nothing to be ashamed of. You matter. You are a beautiful, kind soul and deserve happiness." – Pranav Rathod (Gay from Jaipur/ name changed on request).
"Do not listen to what they told you. What they said about homosexuality being a sin is total bullshit. After you realize you're a lesbian, I promise your life doesn't end. You're still the same girl, with the same interests, same hopes. This will not end you. I won't lie: it's going to be hard, but the world is a better place now, younger me. Don't try and take your own life. It always gets better." – Madhu Sharma (Lesbian from Chandigarh /name changed on request).
"Don't settle! My first serious lesbian relationship happened with a girl I was completely incompatible with. I got so caught up in the fact that there was actually another lesbian at my school that I let my excitement about having my first same-sex relationship obscure all of the very clear red flags saying we shouldn't be together. While you may be eager to jump into a relationship after finally figuring your sexuality out, make sure the reasons you're with someone are the right ones." – Shaila Rao (Lesbian from Mumbai)
"Well do not hate yourself. You have done no wrong by being you. So what if your parents and siblings do not understand you and accept you now? Just continue to be loving and hardworking. Create your future well. Nurture no grudges. Grow and evolve as a person and everything shall fall in place. Trust me one day the same people who are rejecting you today shall be proud of you."- Ashish Sinha (An ally of the LGBTQ+ community from Delhi)
