Holi 2022 has arrived and people across the country are getting ready for the grand celebration of the Hindu festival of love and colours. This year Holi falls on 18 March.

People celebrate the festival with water, balloons, colours and Bhang that gives an extra kick to the enjoyment. Children bring gulal, water pistols and other objects to play Holi by smearing on each other faces.

Some of the safety measures are very much essential while playing Holi for being responsible as sometimes people get exposed to severe chemicals.

Most notably, one needs to be extra careful with their eyes as colours may contain dangerous chemicals that can harm eyes and cause certain irritation.

There are some experts' suggestions to have fun during the Holi celebration without harming yourself and enjoying safely with full energy.

Experts provide tips to prevent allergies and different types of complications that can be caused by playing colours.

Rishi Bhardwaj, HOD Opthalmology, Paras Hospital in Gurugram provides some tips on how to protect your eyes from colours.

According to Bhardwaj, one must wear zero power glasses, protective eyeglasses and sunglasses that can prevent colours from entering the eyes. It will stop the colours from getting closure to the eye parts and from causing any damage to the eyes.

Another way to save eyes from any damage during the Holi celebration is to choose traditional natural colours made from turmeric and flowers as it has natural elements that cause no harm to the eyes or body.

Experts say that many of the colours that are available in the market have a high quantity of hazardous chemicals like silica, asbestos, lead, mercury, mica and others and these chemicals are extremely toxic.

The skin and eyes of a person can face major issues if such colours are used to play Holi. One may encounter different types of skin problems such as allergies, irritation and redness.

Rubbing eyes with colours has the tendency to cause corneal abrasion therefore experts suggest not to rub eyes during the Holi enjoyment when your hand has colours on it.

Contact lenses are harmful and experts strongly recommended not wearing them while playing with colours as there are more chances of these colours depositing in lenses.
