Alcohol, for some, is poison and for some is a means to enjoy life. When it comes to partying with friends, family or colleagues, the most common thing that can be seen in the hands of the party people are glasses of whiskey and that compels one to think as to why is alcohol such an inevitable element whether it is in the celebrations or while dealing with a gloomy state of mind? However, a jaw-dropping revelation made by a recent study is that the Indians are the ones who are seen to drink whiskey the most.
The report on alcohol habits was submitted by the Bank of America Merrill Lynch wherein they have asserted that the Indians are the ones who actually drink the most whiskey and this is the highest in the world! As per the study, about 1.5 billion litres of whiskey is being drunk by the Indians every year. This accounts for about half of the world’s entire whiskey production and if this is the fact, then this is a matter to be proud of and worried at the same time.
Other countries to follow India in the tally of alcohol drinkers include the United States, France, and Japan with figures of 462, 140, and 109 million litres per year, respectively.
However, if seen from the point of view of the population in India then it can rightly be said that there is nothing wrong in India being the highest alcohol drinker. With a population of more than 1.3 billion people, the study report suggests that an Indian drink more than a litre of whiskey per year.
Now coming to the context of whiskey being good or bad for health, another study published in the American Society for Clinical Nutrition in 1991 had suggested that there is no harm in a moderate intake of whiskey. The study says that it only increases energy and decreases the person’s desire for sugar intake. Another merit of drinking whiskey is that the high concentration of ellagic acid in it makes it help neutralize cancer-causing free radicals and this means, the human body gets a shield from the deadly attack of cancer on the regular moderate intake of whiskey. Moreover, the common cold disturbances too are cured by whiskey intake.
