15,000 Bangladeshis granted citizenship in last 5 years: Home Ministry

New Delhi: India has granted citizenship to 15,000 people from Bangladesh in the last five years, and cases of over 83,000 people declared as 'doubtful voters' are pending in the Foreigners Tribunals in Assam, minister of state of Nityanand Rai informed Lok Sabha on Sunday.

'Over 86,000 people were declared as foreigners in Assam in the last five years. The Foreigners' Tribunals are functioning only in Assam,'' Rai stated.

Rai also informed that the detention centers are set up by the State governments and Union Territory administrations according to their requirement to detain any illegal immigrants or foreigners who have completed their sentence, pending deportation to their country.

Details of the number of detention centers are not centrally maintained. These are set up by the state governments and union territory administrations along with the number of foreign nationals detained, added Rai.'
