1,590 New COVID Cases Reported In Last 24 Hours; Countrywide Mock Drills Planned On April 10-11

NEW DELHI: 1590 new COVID-19 cases were recorded in India in the last 24 hours, according to a press release issued by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Saturday morning. This is the highest number of new cases recorded in 146 days.

According to the Health Ministry statement, India's active caseload currently stands at 8,601.

The total number of recoveries from the infection has increased to 4,41,62,832 with 910 in the last 24 hours. India's recovery rate currently stands at 98.79 per cent.

The death toll went up to 5,30,824 with six more fatalities- three reported from Maharashtra and one each recorded in Karnataka, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand. India's overall Covid tally climbed to 4,47,02,257 and active cases account for 0.02 per cent of the total caseload.

It was also stated that during the same period, the Daily Positivity rate and Weekly Positivity rate stood at 1.33 per cent and 1.23 per cent respectively.

The statement also said that 1,19,560 COVID tests were conducted in the last 24 hours, with the number of conducted tests so far reaching a total of 92.08 crores, as of Saturday morning

Under the Nationwide Vaccination Drive, India has so far administered 220.65 crore Covid-19 Vaccine doses (95.20 crores Second Dose and 22.86 crores Precaution Dose), of which 9,497 doses were administered in the last 24 hours.

Concerned at the sudden surge of new Covid cases, the union home ministry on Saturday informed that countrywide mock drills will be held on April 10-11

Informing about the planned mock drills, Rajesh Bhushan, Secretary, Department of Health & FW Ministry, notified in a statement, there has been a gradual increase in COVID-19 cases in India since mid-February 2023, with most cases reported in a few states. The rates of hospitalization and death remain low due to significant COVID-19 vaccination coverage, but public health actions need to be reinvigorated to contain the surge.
